All-new Passat priced from RM160k to RM199k; special Dune Bug also unveiled!

passat_2016__006For some weeks now, the Internet has been abuzz with pictures and news about Volkswagen’s brand new B8 Passat in Malaysia. Earlier this evening, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) have finally revealed prices for the three variants: RM159,990 for the Trendline, RM179,990 for the Comfortline and RM198,990 for the Highline (minus car registration and insurance). To sweeten the deal, VPCM have offered a 5 years free service for all Passats sold in 2016. This is on top of the 5 years warranty and 5 years roadside assist that all new Volkswagen models enjoy.

passat_2016__017The eight-generation Passat now officially replaces the out-going B7 model Passat, which was launched in Malaysia back in 2011. Like its predecessor, the B8 Passat will be locally assembled at DRB-Hicom’s plant in Pekan.

We’ve written about the all new B8 Passat here and was able to get some time behind the wheel of the Highline variant. The B8 sits on Volkswagen’s MQB platform – shared with a wide range of cars across the group, including the Volkswagen Golf and Audi TT Mk3. The first thing you notice is how much lighter the new car feels. Volkswagen says that up to 85kg has been shaved off, depending on model and trim level, and we have no reason to doubt those claims. Also, despite looking larger than its predecessor, the B8 is actually a shorter on the outside, but larger on the inside. Overall height is now also lower, but has improved headroom on the inside.

dune_011A surprise reveal tonight was the Beetle Dune, claimed to be the most rugged Beetle of all time. The Beetle Dune is an ode to the legendary American dune buggies of the 1960s and 1970s – so a mixture of bold, cool and tough, all rolled into a single package.

The Beetle Dune (let’s just call it the Dune Bug) gets signature black stripes and side mouldings, a re-profiled front and rear bumper design, a new rear spoiler, and 18-inch “Canyon” alloys to complete its dune buggy appearance. There’s an increase of 10mm in ground clearance as well, to add to its ruggedness.

dune_010The Dune Bug is powered by Volkswagen’s familiar 1.4 TSI engine with a 7-speed DSG box that makes 150PS and 250Nm. It is decked in an eye-catching shade of Sandstorm Yellow, and comes with bi-xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and front fog lamps with static cornering lights. Only 50 units are available for sale in Malaysia, and is priced at RM179,990 at all authorized Volkswagen dealerships nationwide, and while stocks last.
