Volvo’s V40 T5 updated with new Drive-E powertrain

Volvo, a brand that is established for its reliability and safety, has recently launched their Drive-E powertrain for their various models here in Malaysia, with the Volvo V40 T5 being the latest model to receive this innovative technology. At the base of this all, is Volvo’s bog standard two-litre, four-cylinder engine, codenamed VEP4. Then you add turbocharging tech as a first layer on performance, and you get the T5. Take it one step further and add supercharging on top of this, and you get the T6 (which isn’t available for the V40 in Malaysia).

While the V40 T5 is no slouch, performance has now been pushed even further from 217hp of power and 300Nm of torque to a significant increase of 245hp and 350Nm. All this from a low rev range of 1,500rpm to 4,800rpm ensures a smooth yet exciting drive. Paired with a eight-speed automatic transmission, the V40 T5 has a 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 240km/h.

With Drive-E, it isn’t just performance figures that get a boost, but there are also significant improvements in emissions and fuel efficiency compared to their predecessors. The new V40 model now records 16.4 kilometers per liter of fuel with 163 grams of carbon emissions per kilometer, all this despite a higher power output.

Lennart Stegland, Managing Director of Volvo Cars Malaysia stated, “Our main goal during the development of the Drive-E powertrains was to deliver efficient driving pleasure – powerful engines that consumes less fuel and emits lower emissions.”

He also adds that the V40 T5 offers the best in-class active safety features such as City Safety, Enhanced Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Alert and Park Assist Pilot. With Drive-E, Volvo seeks to even further strengthen their current market offer.

City Safety automatically applies the brakes when it detects an incoming collision with another vehicle in front, which is active up to 50km/h. Enhanced Blind Spot Information System serves to inform the driver of vehicles in blind spots, along with other vehicles approaching rapidly towards the car from the rear up to 70 meters away. Cross Traffic Alert assists to alert the driver of vehicles of incoming traffic when reversing out of a parking lot, and Park Assist Pilot makes parallel parking easier with the car taking over the steering wheel while the driver controls the vehicle speed and the gear selector.

OTR pricing for the Volvo V40 T5 with Drive-E is RM192,888 without insurance and is inclusive of GST, with a five year warranty and 5 years of Volvo-on-Call Roadside Assist. Five exterior colors are available – Ice White, Ember Black, Raw Copper, Bright Silver and Osmium Grey. The model is currently available for orders and viewing at all Volvo authorized dealers nationwide.
